Portesham Farm Rocket Quarry Geoconservation

We had a good morning at Rocket Quarry today and four members got the main rock face tidied up and also the lime kiln removing a lot of brambles.

We also visited the upper quarry and it needs some attention so that is in the program for the next couple of months. It was good to see that the information boards are still in good condition. The dirt beds and stromatolites are very obvious close up.

Thanks to Andy, Paul and Richard for their efforts.

Crack Lane Geoconservation

Yesterday’s session at Crack Lane went well with five members of DIGS clearing vegetation improving access and working on the rock faces.

We also found a good number of common spotted orchids which seem to have benefitted from earlier work clearing bracken, gorse  and brambles. Unfortunately they had not reached flowering stage.

Crookhill Pit – Geoconservation Session

We had a successful morning at Crookhill Pit despite grotty weather.

Pictures are poor as a result. Thanks to Andy and Geof P and Alan for getting the job done – just clearing the paths so we can access the rock faces in the summer.

Good slip on the top of the pit on the south side due to moist weather we have been having.
