Evershot Pit ST 578 050
Site description: Disused sand pit.
Geology: Cretaceous, Lower Chalk and Upper Greensand. A denotified SSSI. A section of the Middle and Upper Cenomanian Chalk overlies a thin clay band containing fossils from lower zones. This lies on an erosion surface of the Exogyra Bed of the Upper Greensand which is phosphatized in the upper 15 cm. Both the clay band and the Exogyra Bed are rich in fossils, many of which are loose in the rubble on the floor of the pit. In the furthest section of the pit the Foxmould underlies the Exogyra Bed. The pit was dug for this unconsolidated sand, which has been used in mortar for building purposes.
There is evidence of badger or fox activity, which should be left undisturbed.
